THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ASCENSION
The theological unity, or perhaps even the temporal experience of the early community, made it seem that Jesus’ resurrection and his ascension were inseparable aspects of a single mystery. Only in the later writings of Luke and John has further theological reflection helped the Christian community to distinguish different dimensions of the mystery. Liturgical tradition has followed the forty-day chronology formulated by Luke. We would miss the point, however, if we were to demand a precise historical chronology of events such as the Resurrection-Ascension that are primarily spiritual in nature and that clearly surpass the bounds of time and space as we know them. What is important for us to grasp is the significance of the Ascension. For Luke, it is the decisive turning point that marks the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry and the beginning of the disciples’ Spirit-led ministry and thus the ministry of the whole church down to our own day. PRAYER CHAPEL: Fr. Paddy would like your input on the possibility of building a freestanding “Prayer Chapel” that would be accessible 24/7 for prayer or adoration. Adoration in the cry room can be a problem when Mass, practices and other events are happening in the church. Other parishes have these chapels and are more willing to participate in adoration when they can enjoy the quiet of a freestanding chapel. The chapel would be approximately 25×25 , built in the green space between the church and the parking garage. Pray on what God would want us to do. Call the parish office or tell Fr. Paddy your feelings on this project. We may offer stained glass windows in the chapel to be donated in memory or in honor of someone. There will be 15 windows at $10,000 each.
MARRIED COUPLES: Save June 1, July 6 and August 3 at 7 PM for an evening of Marriage Enrichment. Baby sitting will be available. Each couple is asked to bring a dish to go with Spaghetti and Meatballs. Drinks will be provided. For information call Linda or Paul Bradford – 396-8880.
MEN’S PRAYER GROUP: Meets every Thursday at 6:00 PM in the Chapel of St Vincent de Paul building. “Your called to be more than a Sunday Catholic”. Come & check us out.
